Artist Statements
Emily Keily
In this Exhibition my works will be exploring the themes of Identity relating directly to the intimate spaces in which people rest, bedrooms. I am interested in the way we use these spaces and how they reflect and contribute to our identities. Sleep is a key factor in my work, the subconscious and dreams and how the influence our lives, as well as how our lives influence them. I will be using different mediums, such as photography, drawing and painting to create portraits of people in their most vulnerable state, sleeping (in their own rooms). I draw inspiration from an array of artists including, Karim Hamid, Catherine Ryan, Shannon Freshwater, and Louise Bourgeois.
Phillipa Griffin
In this exhibition, I plan to explore the theme of Identity - or 'Identitties' through a series of nude photography that display the beauty of the human form. I find the nude to be a pure example of who we are as a person, our underlying form that we cover so often. My models will be of those closest to me - my friends, lover and inspirations. I feel that these people show, not only there identity, but also mine as they are what drive me in so many aspects of my life. An array of artists that have influence me throughout this project include Dean Freeman, Michael J DeMeo, Lucy Carr-Ellison, Terry Richardson, and Alex Freund.
Manuela Owsinskii
In this Exhibition my camera and mirror will seek out my interest in the secrets hidden behind one's identity, through a series of photo's which will consist of a collaboration of shapes to reveal thought patterns. Influenced by a mixed bag of people's take-away orders, pass the parcel, exquisite corpse, trainstreet, sneakerskids & David Carson.
Timothy Duong
This exhibition explores my interest between the link of identity through consumerism, how people and society build sub-cultures and self-imaging through products and brands. Through the use of digital photography and manipulation I will create artworks that reflect consumerism within identity. Many influences comes from Banksy, Wim Delvoye and Ben Frost.
Thomas Thorby Lister
An artist chosen to be a part of this Exhibition is Thomas Thorby-Lister, he is another current Honours students of Sydney College of the Arts and works mainly with drawing and screen-printing, as well as other mediums. His works relate to this Exhibitions themes of Identity as he creates characters based on himself (and others). These characters present both the beautiful and grotesque features of human personalities and identities. His Characters include people with fingers for noses, chubby men holding long-knecks and skinny women in suggestive positions. He presents us with these monstrous characters doing mundane things that gives them a real human quality, suggestive of the darker sides of peoples identities.
Jasmin Douglas
Jasmin Douglas is a 3rd year Printmedia student at Sydney College of Arts. Her artworks are primarily illustrations that reflect childhood and personal memories. They range from cute figures to creepy, melancholy characters that have a distinct look and feel.
Zoe Webber
The artist i have chosen to apart of this exhibition is Zoe Webber. Zoe's work consists of primarily nude photography and portraiture. I feel that, through her work directly relating to my own, Zoe explores the concept of identity in a crude yet beautiful way.
