Q&A

What inspires you as an artist?
Much of my inspiration comes from my childhood, growing up and the thoughts that have developed throughout those years. Beauty, death, the dark side of human nature, evolution, the nude, and the environment are all key inspirations of mine.

What does the term ‘curator’ mean to you?
Keeper/protector of culture. A specialist responsible for an institution's collections.

From both an artistic and curatorial point of view, what does ‘space’ mean to you and why?
Space, from an artistic point of view is very important to me. My themes and ideas strongly relate to the human relationship with the enviroment, and i think that space plays a key (and beautiful) issue in this, yet is not something that i focus strongly on. From a curatoral point of view, space is possible the most impoartant thing. Space allows for the art to blossom. It needs to be cohesive and flowing.

What inspires you as a curator?
Being able to experience art and create a world for it that allows it to reach it's full potential in the eyes of a viewer.

How do you perceive that attitude towards art in a digital context?
For me, this is quiet hard as i believe that experiencing art and seeing art are different things. I like to do things hands on, so digitally creating a gallery is not my cup of tea.

What are the challenges of digital curation?
Being able to show the work/detail behind the pieces on technology. Making it look good. I think that by taking away a first hand experience then you take away a lot from what the work is really like.

What are the positives of digital curation?
Gobal audience. It allows for others to reach and see art that they previously would not of been able to. It also alows for the artist to expand his/her network.

Craft/Technology: Is there a difference for you? What is it?
To me there is a huge difference. Even with photography, an slr is technology, but capturing a good photo is craft. I believe that they are so strongly interlocked, with the basic art princibles being additions onto technology, but still believe that they are very different, and both important.

Does digital technology change how you critique, produce and view art?
As part photographer, the answer is obvious. But i also tackle similar issues within my sculpture work, that being that about the future of our world and enviroment. I think digital technology is important and has allowed art to reach new means that would have never thought to be possible.

Can you describe how artists, nationally or internationally, have utilised digital technology in regards to their practice?
This list could be endless. To start you have most photographers, graffic designers, print artists, video and sound artists, even artists like Stellarc, who uses robortics with digital technology as additions to his own body. On top of all of the above, the majority of major artists use blogs/webpages/sites/whatever to show/sell their work and themselevs to a wider audience. This goes for gallerys and museums too.
