Q & A

What inspires you as an artist?
I am inspired by an array of different things, but mainly from 'the everyday life'. My work is all based on whats around me, my home and my relationship to my own space and the details, "mundane" as they are of life. I'm interested in how people use and inhabit their own private spaces. I explore the themes of the everyday mainly through working with people in their bedrooms, asleep. I'm also very inspired by the subconscious, and particularly with dreams. I believe there is alot of beauty and meaning in the smaller things in life, things that are around all the time and are used or needed but go unnoticed or unappreciated.

What does the term ‘curator’ mean to you?

A curator is someone who may or may not be an artist, but someone with creative inspirations and ideas. A curator must be able to create a consistent or a joining thread that makes an exhibition work together cohesively. They must use the space to the best of its ability, and show the works to the best of their ability. Curators must take into account how the works are shown, eg. lighting, hanging, what works to include and how they work with other artists works.

From both an artistic and curatorial point of view, what does ‘space’ mean to you and why?
From an artistic point of view, space to me in incredibly important. My works deal directly with peoples own intimate and private spaces, their surroundings, their homes, their bedrooms. I find it interesting how people use their 'space' and how it reflects them and influences them in their lives. An artists space is incredibly important for their practice and creation. Having a space that you are comfortable in and can work in without distraction for me, is very difficult in that i like to have my "things" around me, i like to be somewhere familiar, somewhere inspiring.
From a curatorial point of view, space can be a very different thing. It is important to find a space or turn a space into, somewhere that will show the exhibition and the works in the best way, in a cohesive and flowing way that allows people to view the works properly and have some sort of understanding of what the exhibition is about.

What inspires you as a curator?

The artists involved and presenting the works to the best of their ability, creating an exhibition that works cohesively and hopefully allowing people to take something away, and think about the works.

How do you perceive that attitude towards art in a digital context?
For me, i like to work directly onto the material, whether it be paper, wood, canvas, drawing, painting, collaging, cutting etc. I work in a very "hands-on" approach so it is difficult for me to relate that to the digital aspects, especially because my skills with computers and programs like photoshop, illustrator and flash are extremely limited if not non-existent!

What are the challenges of digital curation?

For me, a lot of this project in terms of designing websites and creating images directly on the computer, rather than being hand drawn (for example) has been challenging because as i said, my knowledge and skills (and perhaps interest) are very minimal. Although, i think the digital aspect of blogs and creating an online place for people to become aware of the exhibition is a perfect way of getting the exhibition and artists advertised.

What are the positives of digital curation?

Blogs and websites are incredibly useful and beneficial for promoting or advertising or just talking about pretty-much anything! Having a place where everyone can have input and talk, present or just look is very convenient and interesting.

Craft/Technology: Is there a difference for you? What is it?

I think there is a huge difference. I personally, am not technology-savvy. I have very basic skills and knowledge in the area, although i think it is a wonderful way of communicating and getting information out there. I would like to learn how to use programs to create things online but i don't think my brain works in that way, i get bored of all the codes and files.

Does digital technology change how you critique, produce and view art?
I think digital technology is absolutely excellent for finding information about anything. Blogs, websites, forums etc. are all very useful for discovering new artists, its so accessible so its easy to be in the comfort of your own home and still be able to discover artworks, view artworks and communicate with people from all over the world.
My art is not digital, although i do use photography and photoshop very basically for large scale prints, but then work directly onto the prints with paint, pencil and collage.

Can you describe how artists, nationally or internationally, have utilised digital technology in regards to their practice?
in making art, i think there are a huge amount of artists who create digital works, whether it be photos or digital drawings. I am not particularly interested in this type of art, although i do respect it because of the amount of knowledge required to use those programs. Websites are good for showcasing works, and all types of works, which is perfect to be able to get your stuff out there for people all over the world to see.
